You have reached this page because you are interested in low-cost or sliding scale therapy. We at Modern Therapy Seattle are thrilled to be able to offer low-cost therapy to anyone who needs it, but providing therapy services with interns who are gaining experience to complete their graduate degree.

How is therapy with an intern different from a regular therapist?

The great thing about working with an intern is that they have been educated in the latest research, and have been trained in new and upcoming treatment modalities.

Interns are also under several layers of supervision. Because these interns are students in graduate school, they are are supervised by case consultation instructors in their graduate program. Their work is also overseen by on-site supervisors (Modern Therapy Seattle team members) and supported by on-site case consultation.

Graduate programs for counselors require that the therapy sessions be recorded in order for supervisors to see interns work in action, and to give guidance on therapeutic interventions, and ethical considerations. Please be prepared to have your therapy sessions recorded for this purpose, unless you have extreme extenuating circumstances that would prevent this from being possible.

The other great benefit to working with an intern is that they are able to provide services for a lower fee from regular therapists, and therefore are able to help a wider variety of clients in the community. Modern Therapy Seattle is proud to host interns from several different specialties, such as individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, art therapy and sex therapy.

Because interns are new to the field, there is a possibility that issues may arise in therapy that would be outside of their scope of practice or training. Modern Therapy Seattle reserves the right to recommend treatment with a more experienced (full-fee) therapist if the issues/topics a client wants to work with would require a more specialized service provider.
